Legislative Advocacy

San ramon valley council of Ptas' Legislative Advocacy mission statement

Our goal is to influence, within PTA guidelines, federal, state and local policy makers to pass laws and grant funding which will provide for the improvement and betterment of our public schools in both curriculum and facilities.  In order to accomplish this goal, we will clarify legislative issues affecting our schools to the parent population and community at large, and encourage them to move to action.

National PTA’s Response to the House Passage of the Build Back Better Act

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Build Back Better Act providing a historic $1.75 trillion investment spending plan to establish programs and modify provisions related to education, labor, childcare, health care, taxes, immigration, and the environment.

National PTA is grateful for the investments in our nation’s children and families but is disappointed that federal investments for K-12 school infrastructure were removed from the legislation. PTA has long advocated for quality federal investments in our education system for all children to reach their fullest potential.

The Build Back Better Act is currently in the Senate and is not expected to pass before the end of this year. In addition, the bill will likely be amended before voting takes place on the Senate floor. Read the full press release.

National PTA’s Stance on Gun Violence Prevention

Today marks the ninth anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary school in U.S. history, that claimed the lives of 20 children and six staff members in Newtown, Conn.

National PTA mourns the loss of that day and remains committed to advocating for the safety of all children. Our association strongly believes that Congress must immediately address and enact legislation that will help prevent future tragedies from occurring. In recent years, PTA has specifically advocated for the following pieces of federal legislation for gun violence prevention

• The Gun Violence Prevention Research Act of 2021 (H.R.825 / S.281)

• The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 (H.R. 8)

• The Background Check Expansion Act of 2019 (S. 42)

• The Assault Weapons Ban of 2019 (H.R. 1296 / S. 66)

• The STOP School Violence Act of 2018 (H.R. 4909)

• The Fix NICS Act of 2017 (S. 2135 / H.R. 4434)

• The Gun Violence Research Act of 2017 (H.R. 1478)
